WASHINGTON - A Washington man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for robbing his grandparents at gunpoint in their home.
Forty-year-old Riley Mercer was sentenced on Wednesday. He had been convicted of armed robbery and other offenses in June.
According to evidence presented at trial, Mercer lived with his grandparents, who gave him a key to the home and a job with their business. Prosecutors say Mercer learned that his grandparents kept payroll cash in a safe in their bedroom closet.
Authorities say on Sept. 29, 2011, Mercer and two accomplices used his key to enter the grandparents' home and rob them of $15,000 in cash from the safe. Prosecutors say Mercer and the men wore masks, but his grandmother recognized Mercer's voice.
