RICHMOND, Va. - Gov. Bob McDonnell is asking for federal disaster assistance for Accomack County residents who suffered losses because of superstorm Sandy.
If approved, FEMA's Individual Assistance Program will provide grants, low-interest loans and disaster housing assistance to homeowners and renters. McDonnell said Friday that more than 240 homes were damaged in the Saxis, Sanford and Messongo areas of Accomack County, and most of the damage is not covered by insurance.
McDonnell also requested help from FEMA's Public Assistance Program for 28 communities. That program reimburses state and local governments for debris removal and other costs associated with storm response and recovery.
