ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Female service members have gathered at Arlington National Cemetery to mark the 15th anniversary of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.

The ceremony was held Saturday at the memorial, located just outside Washington. Every five years, female service members gather there.

A candlelight march was to honor service women who have died in military conflicts over the past five years.

Fifty-three fallen female soldiers were being honored.

The Washington Post reports that retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Wilma L. Vaught says "having this memorial has made a tremendous difference in the lives of veterans and service members." The memorial draws about 150,000 visitors a year.

She says "it's more than a memorial. It is an opportunity to tell the story of servicewomen individually and collectively."
