HARRISONBURG, Va. - A man convicted of five bank robberies in Virginia and two other states has been given six life sentences.

Fifty-three-year-old James Louis Whittlesey also was ordered in federal court in Harrisonburg on Wednesday to pay $27,000 restitution.

The former resident of Hydes, Md., admitted to robbing banks at gunpoint in Fawn Grove, Lemoyne and Willow Street, Pa., Wilmington, Del., and Winchester. They occurred from July to October 2011.

Federal prosecutors say after the Winchester robbery, Whittlesey fired his revolver at a police officer, fled in a vehicle before crashing it, then escaped into a nearby drainage ditch. He was arrested in Montreal last December.

While being transported to an initial appearance in federal court in Vermont, he jumped from the window of an SUV but was quickly apprehended.
