ROANOKE, Va. - A company that manufactures night vision goggles for the military has laid off more than 200 hourly workers at its Roanoke County plant.

ITT Exelis spokeswoman Mary Dudley said Thursday that employees were notified their last work day would be Oct. 26. She said reductions were done by seniority.

According to the Roanoke Times (, the company says anticipated reductions in military procurement have reduced the size and frequency of its night vision contracts.

ITT Exelis, which until last year was known as ITT Night Vision, is one of Roanoke County's three largest private employers. Total employment at the plant last week was about 1,070. The facility laid off about 300 workers in January.
