Va. updates drought advisories

RICHMOND, Va. - The state is easing drought advisories for central Virginia and the northern Piedmont region, but keeping a watch in place for the Roanoke River region.

The eased advisory was issued Wednesday by the state Department of Environmental Quality for the Appomattox River basin, which was reduced from a drought warning to a drought watch. The region includes 10 counties, from Appomattox to Prince Edward, and the cities of Colonial Heights, Petersburg and Hopewell.

In the northern Piedmont, a drought watch has been lifted. That region includes eight counties, from Greene to Stafford counties, and the city of Fredericksburg.

A drought watch, meantime, remains in place in the Roanoke River basin, which includes Southside Virginia and the cities of Bedford, Martinsville and Roanoke.

Eased drought advisories reflect higher water levels.
