State police to show off new helicopter

Friday - 10/5/2012, 3:46am  ET

MIDDLE RIVER, Md. (AP) - Maryland state police are taking the first step toward replacing their aging fleet of medevac helicopters.

Police will put the first of the new helicopters on display Friday. Gov. Martin O'Malley is expected to attend the unveiling.

The agency has 11 helicopters, 10 of which are more than 20 years old. The state contracted with AgustaWestland to replace them in the wake of a September 2008 helicopter crash that killed four people.

The agency will ultimately get 10 new helicopters, which it says will allow state police to continue using them to transport trauma patients as well as for search and rescue missions, law enforcement and homeland security.
