Weather Service launches pilot project in Va.

Saturday - 9/22/2012, 7:57am  ET

STERLING, Va. - The National Weather Service office responsible for Baltimore, Washington and the surrounding areas is changing how it presents its forecasts.

The office in Sterling, Va., is launching a pilot program Saturday called Weather-Ready Nation.

The weather service wants its forecasts to be more useful to emergency managers and the public. Changes include plans to present forecasts with best- and worst-case scenarios for impending storms, and give better warnings about potential storm surges.

The Sterling office provides forecasts for most of Maryland, the District of Columbia, northern Virginia and a few counties in West Virginia.

Launch of the pilot project coincides with an open house the Sterling office is hosting Saturday and Sunday.
