Bus cameras will snap shots of drivers passing Frederick Co. buses

Frederick County Public Schools are partnering with Xerox and its CrossSafe program to protect students getting on and off school buses, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Beginning on the first day of school, Aug. 27, buses will be outfitted with cameras that will monitor students getting on and off and record drivers who pass illegally, according to the release.

Registered owners of vehicles caught passing a bus when children are getting on and off will be mailed a $125 civil citation, the release states.

“The first priority for our bus drivers is the safety of our children,” FCPS Acting Director of Transportation Mac McLean said in a statement. “We support Frederick’s commitment – through this program – to the safety of our children.”

Xerox will maintain the program under a five-year competitively bid contract.

Frederick County is the first in Maryland to install enforcement systems on school buses, according to the release.
