BALTIMORE - The estate of former Maryland governor, comptroller and Baltimore mayor William Donald Schaefer is leaving $1.4 million to a Baltimore neighborhood fund.

The William Donald Schaefer Civic Fund was established by the late governor in 2008 and provides grants to neighborhood groups for improvement projects. Schaefer established the fund with a $400,000 donation, transferring money remaining from his campaign finance account. The fund is one of 600 funds overseen by the Baltimore Community Foundation, which said it distributed more than $25 million to nonprofit organizations last year.

Schaefer, who died in April 2011 at the age of 89, also left $500,000 to longtime aide Lainy LeBow-Sachs, and smaller amounts to the National Aquarium, the Maryland Zoo and several churches. Schaefer left an estate estimated at about $2.5 million.
