WASHINGTON - D.C. police say the beating of two men in Northeast may be a hate crime.

Officers say shortly after midnight on Sunday, two men got out of a cab a few blocks from their home and were walking on the 1900 block of 3rd Street holding hands when three suspects appeared and yelled homophobic slurs at them.

Police say the suspects beat the men. WJLA reports 29-year-old yoga instructor Michael Hall had the bones in his face shattered and was taken to a hospital. His partner, Michael Roike, took a string of hits trying to protect Hall.

In the midst of the attack, a woman came running from her home and began yelling at the suspects, who fled.

The police department's Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit was notified of the crime.

The suspects are in their late teens to early 20s. Police have made no arrests.
