Baltimore spending panel OKs raise for fire chief

Thursday - 7/12/2012, 1:06pm  ET

BALTIMORE - Baltimore's fire chief is getting a raise and a six-year contract extension.

The city's Board of Estimates on Wednesday approved by a 3-2 vote a contract deal that gives Chief James S. Clack a raise of nearly 18 percent by 2018.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake had recommended the extension, in part because of a steep reduction in the number of fire-related deaths in the city.

The new contract comes as Clack faces union anger over the current or future closings of three fire companies for budget reasons.

Clack said in a statement that he was honored by the contract and proud of the department's work in reducing the number of fire fatalities and injuries.
