BALTIMORE (AP) - New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show Baltimore lost about 1,500 people in the 15 months after the 2010 census.

The new estimates released Thursday place Baltimore's population at 619,500. Based on the estimates, the populations of Boston, Seattle and Denver have all surpassed Baltimore's total.

The Baltimore Sun reports the city has fallen from being the 10th biggest city in 1980 to the 24th largest city.

The District of Columbia is now about 1,500 people away from surpassing Baltimore's rank. Washington gained more than 16,000 people in the 15 months after the 2010 census, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation.

Among big cities, New Orleans grew the fastest during the period. It is rebounding from population losses after Hurricane Katrina.
