NORFOLK, Va. - The Navy plans to hold a wreath-laying ceremony at its base in Norfolk to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.
The event will take place at 9 a.m. Monday to honor the sacrifices of Americans who fought in the key World War II battle.
The Battle of Midway took place June 4-7, 1942, over and near the U.S. installment at the Midway atoll in the Pacific Ocean. It marked the strategic turning point for the United States in its efforts against Japan. The battle undercut Japanese naval superiority, and the United States soon took the offensive.
