WASHINGTON - Some homeless veterans are getting permanent housing in the District of Columbia thanks to a federal grant.

The D.C. Housing Authority placed eligible veterans this week with pre-screened landlords. The Washington Post ( reports that the program allows qualified recipients to receive a voucher that averages $15,000 annually to use to secure an apartment.

The newspaper says part of a $1.5 million grant from the federal Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program was used for Wednesday's housing fair. Some 80 homeless veterans and their families were matched with permanent housing.

The city reportedly has enough money remaining to place an additional 70 homeless veterans.
