WASHINGTON — The mother of all mail days has arrived.
The U.S. Postal Service says there isn't much of a drop around Mother's Day. Package deliveries have actually picked up.
Post Office parking lots and lines for stamps will be jammed until late Thursday afternoon.
"It's right up there with the holiday time when people are sending Christmas cards and Hanukkah cards," says Laura Dvorak, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service.
"If you're just going to send a card, you need to get that in the mail no later than Thursday," she says.
For cross-country deliveries, Wednesday is a better cutoff date.
Emails and various online transactions have cut deeply into traditional mailings. But when it comes to mom, most make an exception.
But if long work hours or shameless laziness keep people from getting to the Post Office, there is still a backup plan.
"If you are a procrastinator, you have until Saturday to get it express mailed to your mother," Dvorak says.
