Richmond police report 2012 spike in moped thefts

Wednesday - 5/2/2012, 1:36pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond police say rising gas prices have led to a spike in moped thefts.

So far this year, police have recorded 79 thefts of the gas-sipping two-wheelers _ a 147 percent increase over last year.

Police say they believe the moped thefts are linked to the higher price of gasoline, which flirted with the $4-a-gallon mark until it began to decline.

Detectives are urging moped owners to lock their vehicles when parked and record the serial numbers to help recover their moped if it's stolen.
