Md. DNR to help marinas meet boat cleaning regs

Monday - 4/23/2012, 8:30am  ET

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland's Department of Natural Resources says it is accepting applications from marinas seeking help in complying with new regulations for wastewater from boat cleaning.

DNR says water used to pressure wash boat hulls usually contains copper, zinc and lead from antifouling paints. New regulations set to take effect in 2015 will have much tighter controls on the amount of dissolved metals that can be discharged into state waters.

The department says the Clean Marina Program will be able to fund engineering services for about 15 boatyards. The deadline to apply is May 18 and decisions will be announced by mail the week of June 4.
