Unlimited 28-day pass proposed for Metro rail

Tuesday - 4/10/2012, 2:14am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - Riders on Metro rail could purchase an unlimited, 28-day pass under a plan that will come before the board of directors this week.

The Washington Post reports the new pass would cost $230 and would be available only on electronic SmarTrip cards. The Metro board will consider it Thursday.

The plan was released Monday, a day after Metro said its 2013 budget deficit would be $16 million less than expected.

Officials plan to hold the line on the maximum fare for riders who use Metro's shuttle service for the disabled.

However, rail and bus fares would rise an average of about 5 percent.
