Prince William's Stewart to announce 2013 LG plans

Monday - 4/9/2012, 4:21pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. - Republican Corey Stewart is making his widely reported intent to run for lieutenant governor next year official this week.

Stewart, the chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, plans to make his formal announcement on Wednesday.

He said in a January interview with Charlottesville radio station WINA that he would run for lieutenant governor in 2013, and his comments were also reported in the News & Messenger newspaper of Manassas.

Stewart announced his intent to run in 2009 for lieutenant governor, but withdrew in 2008 after incumbent Republican Bill Bolling said he would seek re-election and defer his run for governor to 2013. That cleared the way for Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell's uncontested nomination.

Bolling and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli are competing for the 2013 GOP gubernatorial nomination.
