Baltimore police handcuff kids arrested at school

BALTIMORE (AP) - Civil rights advocates are objecting to the handcuffing of four children arrested by Baltimore police at school.

Officers took the children from Morrell Park Elementary School in handcuffs on Thursday.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland says the arrests violate state regulations that advise that an arrest at school during school hours should aim to avoid embarrassing the student. Police say it is department policy to handcuff anyone under arrest, regardless of age, and the children were taken from a classroom to an office, where they were handcuffed.

The children, three girls and a boy ranging in age from 8 to 10, were charged with aggravated assault. It's alleged that one child tried to put another child's head under water and one victim was assaulted on train tracks.
