Artists to use pig statues to help tout Smithfield

SMITHFIELD, Va. (AP) - Smithfield artists will interpret their town's history and traditions on eight life-size fiberglass pigs.

Local tourism and arts groups are sponsoring the $10,000 public art project. Meat-processing giant Smithfield Foods donated the $800, 3-foot-tall pigs, modeled after one that stands outside its nearby plant.

Artist Priscilla Barbour tells the Daily Press that her pig will feature a painting of Windsor Castle, home of Smithfield founder Arthur Smith. It also will show the town's waterfront park. Another artist's creation dubbed "Sweet Swine of Avon" is complete with Elizabethan garb, after the town's long-running Shakespeare class.

The pigs will go up in the town's historic district, making their debut at Olden Days Festival in late June.
