PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland has confiscated more than $43 million worth of cocaine from a go-fast vessel in the Caribbean Sea.

The Coast Guard said Tuesday the Northland made the interdiction on March 3, confiscating more than 3,500 pounds of cocaine. Four crew members were also detained. An embarked helicopter crew from Jacksonville, Fla., spotted the vessel with bales on deck.

The interdiction was carried out as part of Operation Martillo, an international effort to stop the shipment of illegal drugs, weapons and cash in Central American waters.

The cutter Northland is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter home ported in Portsmouth, Va. Also assisting in the interdiction was the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pea Island, a 110-foot patrol boat home ported in Key West, Fla.
