Baltimore schools to continue testing security

Monday - 3/5/2012, 7:24am  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore school system is going to send testing monitors to all schools administering the upcoming state assessments.

The move is among those that have been made over the last two years by CEO Andres Alonso in an effort to prevent cheating scandals. The Baltimore Sun reports than Alonso has spent roughly $360,000 this year on monitors and has also taped a video message that includes warnings about the consequences of cheating.

Jimmy Gittings, the president of the city principals union, has asked the school board to overhaul the process for investigating test irregularities and has called for investigations into alleged cheating at 16 schools to be suspended.

Under new union contracts, city teachers and administrators are evaluated partly on student achievement.
