Va. firefighters control 800-acre wildfire

BLACKWATER, Va. - The Virginia Department of Forestry says they have controlled an 800-acre wildfire in the state's remote southwest corner.

The department said the fire in 8-foot buffalo grass was declared under control Tuesday afternoon after threatening more than 30 homes and other structures in the Blackwater area. The fire did not cause any injuries or structural damage.

The fire began Monday in Lee County, which is in Virginia's farthest southwest corner and bordered by Tennessee and Kentucky. The fire was in the vicinity of Routes 600 and 602.

Despite the mountainous terrain, department firefighters and local volunteers put a containment line around the fire before declaring it under control. Forestry officials said they will monitor the smoldering fire for the next few days.

The cause of the fire is not known.
