Physics gear heading from ODU to study universe

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Physics equipment being built at Old Dominion University is slowly making its way to Jefferson Lab in Newport News.

Part of the equipment that moved from Norfolk to the lab on Monday will ultimately be used to study questions about the universe.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the harp-shaped piece of a "drift chamber" is strung with about 5,000 wires sensitive enough to catch a single electron broken from an atom.

Four more pieces are under construction and will be joined together at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility over the next few years and will be used to study atomic particles.

The drift chamber is part of a $310 million upgrade of the Jefferson Lab.
