Va. board OKs tunnel project funds, tolls delayed

Thursday - 4/19/2012, 12:16pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. - Motorists won't have to pay tolls for a new tunnel connecting Norfolk and Portsmouth until 2014.

Media outlets report that the Commonwealth Transportation Board will allocate $100 million to help pay for the Midtown Tunnel project. Gov. Bob McDonnell requested the funding.

Wednesday's unanimous vote allocates money set aside by the state for the $2.1 billion project that wasn't needed due to savings resulting from bond refinancing.

The project includes the new tunnel, rehabilitation of the existing Midtown and Downtown tunnels, and extending the Martin Luther King Freeway.

Revenue from the tolls will help pay for the project. The tolls were scheduled to begin in late summer at the existing tunnels and the freeway.
