BOYDTON, Va. - Law enforcement officers in Mecklenburg County soon won't have to drive nearly an hour to transport inmates to the Meherrin River Regional Jail.
A new regional jail satellite facility in Boydton will reduce the commute to about 10 minutes. Inmates are expected to begin arriving at the 80-bed facility in February.
Dinwiddie County administrator Kevin Massengill tells The Progress-Index ( http://bit.ly/SpHa3I) that the satellite facility will allow officers to stay in their towns.
The main 677-bed facility opened in July 2012. It replaced local jails in Dinwiddie, Brunswick and Mecklenburg counties.
