Walmart delays opening of stores in Washington

Monday - 4/9/2012, 7:55am  ET

WASHINGTON - Walmart is extending its timeline to open six stores in the District of Columbia, and now plans to open the first one at the end of 2013.

The Washington Post ( http://tinyurl.com/cpn6y5z) reports that Walmart has delayed the opening the stores after facing some resistance from activists and opponents. Company spokesman Steven Restivo says it will use the extra time to further engage with the neighborhoods surrounding the stores.

The retailer first announced plans to open stores in the city in November 2010, saying it would open four by the end of 2012. It later said it would open two more.

The first Walmart will likely be at the corner at Georgia and Missouri avenues in Northwest. The company expects to break ground this spring.
