BALTIMORE - Maryland is adding a new area code.
The Public Service Commission says that the new 667 code being launched Saturday is being added because the 410 and 443 area codes will soon be exhausted.
Customers with existing 410 and 443 telephone numbers will not be affected, but customers in central Maryland and the Eastern Shore who request new phone numbers may be assigned the new area code. Officials say rates and coverage areas won't change.
The new area code is expected to create an additional 8 million numbers.
