CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A former employee will spend 16 years in prison for embezzling more than $1 million from a Chesapeake construction company.
Shelly Annette Spencer pleaded guilty to 65 embezzlement counts last October. The Virginian-Pilot ( http://bit.ly/Pb1h2r) says the 49-year-old Spencer was sentenced Monday in Chesapeake Circuit Court.
According to the indictment, Spencer embezzled about $20,000 a month from Higgerson-Buchanan Inc., beginning in late 2004. She was a clerk for the company for more than 23 years.
Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Derek Wagner says Spencer used the money to buy new trucks and campers, take trips to Atlantic City, N.J., and pay bills.
