A Frederick man is charged with auto theft after taking a car from the leasing agency he works for without permission, according to court documents.
Vaughn Demetrius Davis, 42, was arrested Thursday by Frederick police and charged with theft, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, unauthorized removal of property and driving on a suspended license.
Officers responded to All Car Leasing Inc. on Baughman's Lane for a report of a vehicle theft, and spoke to an employee who said Davis had taken a red Kia Spectra from the lot without permission and that the car was parked at Davis' home, according to charging documents filed in Frederick County District Court. Officers spoke to another man by phone who told them he had ridden in the car with Davis.
The officers then contacted the manager of All Car, who said the car had been missing since about 7 p.m. Wednesday, and that management was planning to perform a GPS track before officially reporting it stolen.
Police went to Davis' house in the 1100 block of Frontline Drive, found the vehicle and spoke to Davis. According to the documents, Davis initially denied that he had taken the car and said he didn't have the keys.
But after officers spoke to him about getting a warrant to search his home for the keys, Davis admitted he had taken the car. He said he had made an under-the-table deal with another employee -- whom he refused to name -- to borrow the car and pay the employee at a later date. He said he needed the car to visit his sick mother in Prince George's County.
Davis was being held Friday at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $1,750 bail, which was reduced from $10,000 at a bail review Friday.
