NFL SIDELINES-WEEK 3

UNDATED (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks gave Peyton Manning just enough time to engineer a game-tying drive in the final minute of regulation this afternoon, but they never gave him a chance to win it.

Marshawn Lynch ran for a six-yard touchdown on the first series of overtime to give the Seahawks a 26-20 win over the Denver Broncos, a rematch of Super Bowl 48. Kam Chancellor appeared to ice the victory by intercepting Manning deep in Seattle territory, setting up Steven Hauschka’s short field goal that put the Seahawks ahead 20-12 with 59 seconds left. However, Manning extended the game by hitting Demaryius (deh-MAR’-ee-uhs) Thomas for a two-point conversion after throwing a 26-yard scoring strike to Jacob Tamme (TAM’-ee) with 18 seconds left. But Seattle recovered after the Broncos went 80 yards in just 41 seconds.

Lynch also grabbed a touchdown pass from Russell Wilson, who was 24 of 34 for 258 yards, two TDs and one interception.

Manning threw both of his touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and completed 31 of his 49 passes for 303 yards and one interception.

The outcome leaves both teams 2-1.

Drew Stanton threw a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes to rookie John Brown as Arizona beat San Francisco for the first time in five tries, 23-14. Stanton completed 18 of 33 for 244 yards and two scores in helping the Cardinals improve to 3-0. The 49ers never scored after mounting 80-yard touchdown drives on their first two possessions.

At the Meadowlands, Rashad Jennings ran for a career-high 176 yards and a touchdown and Eli Manning threw two TD passes as the New York Giants overcame some early mistakes and beat the previously unbeaten but suddenly error-prone Houston Texans 30-17.

The victory not only put some life back into the 1-2 Giants after two disappointing efforts, it also ended any chance of a second straight 0-6 start for Tom Coughlin’s (KAWF’-lihnz) team.

In Buffalo, the previously unbeaten Bills came crashing to earth with a 22-10 home loss to San Diego. Philip Rivers threw two touchdown passes to Eddie Royal. Malcom Floyd had two catches for 98 yards, and the Chargers overcame the loss of running back Danny Woodhead, who hurt his right ankle in the first quarter. Donald Brown stepped in and finished with 31 carries for 62 yards and five catches for 27 yards.

Rivers was 18 of 25 for 256 yards. The Chargers are off to a 2-1 start for the third time in four years.

The NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles are 3-0 after outlasting Washington 37-34 in a game marred by a fourth quarter brawl to ruin ex-Eagle DeSean Jackson’s return to the City of Brotherly Love. Jackson caught an 81-yard TD pass, but the Eagles had the last laugh. Jordan Matthews, the rookie who replaced Jackson, and veteran Jeremy Maclin lifted the Philadelphia Eagles past the star receiver’s new team.

Matthews caught two TD passes, Maclin had one, and the Eagles stormed from behind to win.

The nasty game was marred by a fourth-quarter brawl near the Washington sideline after Eagles quarterback Nick Foles (FOHLZ) was blindsided by defensive lineman Chris Baker during an apparent interception. Baker and Eagles left tackle Jason Peters were ejected.

The New Orleans Saints won for the first time this season, 20-9 over the Minnesota Vikings behind Drew Brees’ two TD passes. For the Vikings, the loss capped a week of distractions. The club first announced that star running back Adrian Peterson would play, then later changed course and said Peterson would leave the team indefinitely to deal with child abuse allegations.

Minnesota then lost starting quarterback Matt Cassel (KAS’-uhl) with a toe injury early in the second quarter. He was replaced by rookie Teddy Bridgewater, who completed 12 of 20 for 150 yards while leading two scoring drives that both ended with field goals.

Kansas City has its first win after Alex Smith shook off five sacks to throw three touchdown passes in a 34-15 rout of the Dolphins at Miami. Knile (NY’-ul) Davis put the Chiefs ahead to stay with a 21-yard TD run midway through the first quarter and finished with 132 yards on 32 carries.

Joe McKnight grabbed a pair of scoring strikes from Smith, who was 19 of 25 for 186 yards.

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed just 21 of 43 passes for 205 yards.

Justin Tucker kicked a 32-yard field as time expired, giving the Baltimore Ravens a 23-21 win at Cleveland. Tucker’s boot capped another challenging week for the Ravens (2-1), who continue to be dogged by questions surrounding running back Ray Rice’s domestic violence suspension.

Joe Flacco set up Tucker’s game-winner with a 32-yard pass to Steve Smith with 1:28 left.

At Ford Field, Detroit’s defensive front smothered Green Bay in the Lions’ 19-7 victory over Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Don Carey returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown.

The 2-1 Lions came into the game with a secondary decimated by injuries, but that didn’t much matter with Rodgers under constant pressure. He was sacked twice and threw for only 162 yards. Green Bay wasn’t any better running the ball, and fell to 1-2.

In St Louis, the Rams raced out to an early 21-0 lead on Dallas, but the Cowboys roared back to score a 34-31 thrilling win. Terrance Williams scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, and Bruce Carter returned an interception 25 yards for a TD on the next snap for the 2-1 Cowboys. The comeback matched the largest in Dallas history, the other two coming in overtime in 1984 against New Orleans and 1999 against Washington.

Jacksonville’s home opener hardly could have gone worse. The Jaguars remained winless as previously winless Indianapolis trounced the Jags 44-17 behind Andrew Luck’s four touchdown passes. The Jaguars trailed 30-0 at halftime and benched quarterback Chad Henne (HEH’-nee), in favor of top draft pick Blake Bortles. The third overall pick in the NFL draft finished with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 223 yards.

The New England Patriots won their 12th home opener in the last 13 years by stifling Oakland 16-9. Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass. Stephen Gostkowski kicked three field goals. Oakland is clearly not an E=astern team. The winless Raiders lost their 15th straight game in the Eastern time zone. They were held to three field goals by Sebastian Janikowski.

In Cincinnati, Andy Dalton caught a touchdown pass — the first Bengals quarterback to pull off that feat — as Cincinnati stayed undefeated by beating Tennessee 33-7 a few hours after the Titans got sad news. The 3-0 Bengals head into their bye week with their best start in eight years.

A few hours before kickoff, the 1-2 Titans learned that kicker Rob Bironas (bih-ROH’-nihs) had died overnight in a one-car crash in Nashville. He’d been released in March after his ninth season with Tennessee.
