RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia Tech student has been named national president of the Future Farmers of America for the upcoming year.

Woodstock native Brian Walsh was elected at the FFA's convention and expo earlier this month in Louisville, Ky.

The FFA says Walsh is an agribusiness major who hopes to pursue a master's degree. He wants to become an agriculture teacher and FFA adviser.

Six students are elected each year at the convention to represent the organization as national officers.

The officers travel to interact with business, industry, government and education leaders. They also lead training seminars for FFA members throughout the country and help set organization policy.

The FFA has more than 7,500 local chapters.
