Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver says he will step aside at the end of the month.
Weaver has shepherded the school through two conference realignments and overseen vast facilities improvements in 16 years as AD.
Weaver says in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he made the decision about four weeks ago. He told senior staff Monday.
He says "once in a while, we're not able to live out our goals and objectives, and this is one of them."
Weaver revealed in 2008 that he is battling Parkinson's disease and in recent years has undergone four back surgeries and a hip replacement.
He says he's due to have both of his hips replaced in the near future.
