Sunday - 11/3/2013, 1:50pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The District of Columbia's Francis Scott Key Elementary School in northwest Washington is celebrating an overhaul of its playground.

Mayor Vincent Gray and Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh are scheduled to join the school's staff and students Sunday afternoon to open the new playground.

The improvements include a stone dust walking track, play areas for 2- to 5-year-old students and a play area for 5 to 12-year-old students. There is also a new artificial turf playing field.

City officials say this is one of 32 play spaces that are being built or renovated across the district under a playground improvement initiative.
