Va. awarded $400k to help cover costs of AP tests

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Slightly more than $400,000 is headed to the Virginia Department of Education to cover a portion of the fees charged to low-income students taking advanced placement tests.

The funding is part of nearly $29 million awarded to 42 states from the U.S. Department of Education.

The grant payments are based on the anticipated number of test-takers, among other factors. Federal education officials say the payments should be sufficient to cover all but $10 of the cost of each advanced placement exam taken by a low-income student.
