Bedford leader defends teacher 'crybabies' remark

Thursday - 5/2/2013, 11:29am  ET

BEDFORD, Va. -- Bedford County Supervisor Annie Pollard is standing by her comment that some teachers are "crybabies."

Pollard drew the ire of teachers and county school board members after she made the comment last week at a Board of Supervisors meeting. Pollard was responding to an earlier request by some teachers for more school funding from the county.

The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/10umxS3 ) reports that Pollard issued a statement Wednesday saying the county has some of the best teachers in Virginia. She says her comment was directed to a few teachers, specific school board members and school staff.

Pollard says taxpayers count on her to protect their tax dollars.

School board chairman Gary Hostutler said earlier this week that Pollard's comment was demeaning.
