W&M board approves tuition guarantee

Saturday - 4/20/2013, 7:36pm  ET

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The College of William and Mary is locking in tuition rates for new Virginia students and tying increases for returning in-state students to the inflation rate.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/Z9gNm5 ) that the Board of Visitors approved the plan Friday. College officials say it brings predictability to the cost of a degree.

New in-state students next year will pay $10,428 in tuition. That rate will be frozen for four years.

Mandatory fees will not be locked in. Those charges and room and board will bring the total to $25,279.

Future classes will start with a higher tuition rate, also guaranteed for four years.

Returning Virginia students will pay $8,833 in tuition, a 1.8 percent increase based on inflation. With mandatory fees and room and board, the cost will be $23,684.
