David Catania: No reinvestigation of test cheating

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chairman of the D.C. Council's education committee says he does not plan to reinvestigate allegations of widespread standardized test cheating.

Council member David Catania told The Washington Post ( ) on Sunday that he will instead focus on improving the integrity of future tests. An internal memo made public Friday shows D.C. school officials were aware in early 2009 about the possibility of widespread cheating. The allegations included the changing of wrong answers to correct ones by teachers to improve test scores.

Catania says reinvesting the allegations would be impractical and yield little in terms of accountability. The council member says it makes more sense to tighten test security. Catania introduced a bill earlier this year to make cheating illegal. A hearing is scheduled Thursday on the bill.
