WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nine groups that have applied to open new charter schools in Washington are preparing to present their ideas to the D.C. Public Charter School Board.

The Washington Post ( ) reports a hearing is scheduled for Monday to give the charter board a chance to ask questions before voting to approve or deny the new applications.

The new applicants include eight local groups and one national education management organization, Connections Education. It's seeking to open a blended-learning high school in Ward 2.

Other proposals include three alternative high schools for at-risk youth, two Montessori programs for young children, a middle school in Ward 4 and an adult GED program. A shuttered private school in Ward 7 also is seeking to convert to public funding.

The groups could open in fall 2014.
