LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Liberty University says it's moving forward with plans to convert two islands in the middle of the James River near downtown Lynchburg into athletic parks.
Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said the school plans to construct about 19 multi-purpose athletic fields on the islands and two access bridges.
The News & Advance reports (http://bit.ly/Zr5vnq ) that that the plans for Treasure Island and Daniel Island announced Wednesday remain entirely conceptual and flexible.
The islands owned by Liberty were abandoned in the 1980s after one of them was ravaged by flood and fire.
The plans also include bleachers, a vending area, a pavilion, portable bathrooms and lighting. Renderings provided Wednesday also included parking lots, docks, boat-launch ramps and a man-made beach. Costs and a timeline for the project were not provided.
