Training academy to start again following shooting

Tuesday - 2/19/2013, 9:56am  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore police say a training academy put on hold by an accidental shooting of a trainee is expected to resume at least some operations.

The academy was suspended after an instructor accidentally shot a trainee in the head during an exercise in Baltimore County. The trainee was critically wounded and remains in the hospital.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the academy will resume classroom operations and academic instruction Tuesday but not firearms training. That portion of the instruction will be pushed to the end of the curriculum.

Also on Tuesday police recruits and training instructors will get a chance to meet the new director of the department's education and training section, Maj. Joseph Smith. Smith replaces Maj. Eric Russell who was put on administrative suspension while an investigation is ongoing.
