OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The state Senate Education Committee is hearing a bunch of education reform bills proposed by the committee's Republican leadership.

One proposal _ Senate Bill 5237 _ would make third graders who score near the bottom on a statewide reading test repeat the grade and then would give them more help to become fluent readers.

Ben Rarick of the State Board of Education told the committee he worried about creating a high stakes graduation test for third graders.

Another bill _ Senate Bill 5328 _ would give letter grades to schools, based primarily on their test scores and graduation rates. It is unclear how this new plan would work with the accountability system already being developed by the State Board of Education.

Senate Bill 5329 would have the state take over failing school districts and put a private, nonprofit group in charge of the schools.
