RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth University says an internal investigation into the firing of women's volleyball coach James Finley was not discriminatory.

In a statement Thursday, VCU President Michael Rao said the firing was made in accordance with school policies and not as a result of any discriminatory action by its athletic director.

Finley had filed a complaint with the university, claiming he was fired because he was gay. The 52-year-old was fired in Nov. 19, one day one day after VCU lost in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. The Rams finished 25-6, their best winning percentage (.806) in Finley's eight-year tenure. The school already has begun a search for a new coach.

Finley told The Associated Press that he's reviewing the results of the investigation and weighing his options.
