Javier Miyares appointed UMUC president

Monday - 10/1/2012, 4:34pm  ET

ADELPHI, Md. - Javier Miyares has been appointed president of University of Maryland University College, a state school that specializes in online education for members of the military stationed overseas.

Miyares had been serving as acting president at UMUC since February, when the previous president, Susan Aldridge, was placed on leave. She resigned a month later for reasons that were never fully explained.

UMUC is the nation's largest public university, with more than 90,000 students. More than half are military service members, veterans and their families.

Miyares' appointment was announced Monday by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, which followed the recommendation of Chancellor William Kirwan. The 65-year-old Miyares has been an administrator at UMUC since 2001. He was born in Cuba and fled Fidel Castro's regime at age 14.
