WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Republican Party says it's shifting its focus from the ongoing government shutdown to the debt ceiling.
All of the Republican political committees are shifting their message. That includes the Republican National Committee, the Republican Governors Association, and the campaign committees for the House, Senate and state legislatures. Their goal is to pressure Democrats into negotiating fiscal reforms in exchange for raising the borrowing limit.
Polling shows more Americans blame Republicans than Democrats for the shutdown. But the RNC says Republicans are on stronger ground with the debt ceiling because most Americans still believe the government spends too much.
The partial shutdown is entering its second week with few signs of a way out. But the greater concern is an unprecedented U.S. default if the approaching debt ceiling isn't raised.
