Israelis destroy Hamas tunnels, deaths mount in 12-day offensive

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli bulldozers have demolished more than a dozen tunnels in the Gaza Strip. But the military says two Israeli soldiers and at least one Palestinian were killed in a shootout with militants in one tunnel.

The Israeli military also says 13 heavily armed Palestinians entered Israel through a tunnel from Gaza and were killed by an Israeli airstrike.

Israel embarked on its ground offensive late Thursday in part to seek and destroy the tunnels.

Officials in Gaza say Israel’s 12-day offensive against Hamas militants has left at least 342 Palestinians dead.

Israel today reported its second civilian death from the fighting. Police say a rocket fired from Gaza killed a man near the southern city of Dimona and wounded four people.

Israel says militants have fired more than 1,600 rockets at Israeli cities since July 8. It says the military has hit more than 2,350 targets in Gaza, including 1,100 rocket launchers.
