Foes of political redistricting process to relay

BALTIMORE (AP) — Opponents of Maryland’s congressional redistricting process are holding a 225-mile relay this weekend to call attention to gerrymandering.

The Gerrymander Meander begins Friday.

Gerrymandering is the process in which state officials draw congressional districts to help their party.

Participants will run, ride bikes and paddle boats in an around- the-clock relay.

Jennifer Bevan-Dangel, who is the director of government watchdog group Common Cause Maryland, is calling the event “a true exercise for democracy.”

The event is being held in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District, which has been dubbed by critics as one of the most gerrymandered in the nation.

The event will begin with a news conference in Baltimore’s Roosevelt Park. It is scheduled to end at the Maryland State House in Annapolis on Sunday.
