YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) -- A court has convicted a former presidential candidate in the ex-Soviet nation of Armenia of attempted murder for ordering the shooting of another fringe contender ahead of a presidential election earlier this year and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.

Vardan Sedrakian was found guilty Monday of attempted murder for having two other men carry out the Jan. 31 attack on Paruir Airikian, who was wounded.

Despite the shooting, the election was held on schedule in February, and incumbent President Serge Sarkisian won easily with nearly 59 percent of the vote.

Sedrakian pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer said he would appeal the verdict and sentence.

The court also convicted two other men of preparing and perpetrating the attack and sentenced them to 12 and 13 years in prison.
